Major emphasis on 1874-1945, the period of the borough's most rapid growth and experience with modern urban problems. Topics include ethnic in-migration and mobility; the effects of mass-transit development; Prohibition; and the ways various external events, such as wars and depression, have influenced the borough and its people.
